Description

Thiazolyl blue, also known as MTT, is a yellow tetrazole compound that is widely used in cell viability assays. It is reduced by metabolically active cells to a purple formazan product, which can be quantified spectrophotometrically. This reduction is dependent on the activity of mitochondrial enzymes, specifically succinate dehydrogenase. The formation of formazan is directly proportional to the number of viable cells, making MTT assay a reliable indicator of cell proliferation and cytotoxicity. MTT assay is a simple, sensitive, and cost-effective method for assessing cell viability. It has been widely used in various research areas, including drug discovery, toxicology, and cell biology. The study of MTT is important for understanding cell function and for evaluating the effects of various compounds on cell viability. The compound is commercially available and is typically synthesized through a multi-step process involving the reaction of 2-mercaptothiazole with a diazonium salt.'
