Toxicity

Lutein and its ester form administered orally at doses of 4, 40, and 400 mg/kg body weight for 4 weeks for short-term toxicity study and 13 weeks for a subchronic toxicity study did not produced any mortality, change in body weight, food consumption pattern, organ weight, and other adverse side reactions. It can be concluded that crystalline lutein is a safe and GRAS source of Lutein for its proposed uses in food.

Bioavailability

It is not clear how oil-in-water nanoemulsions of lutein may affect bioavailability and consequently alter lipoprotein metabolism, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Lutein bioavailability was determined as they might be incorporated into dietary supplements. The particle size, potential, microstructure, environmental stability, rheological properties and in vitro digestion stability were assessed.

Dosage Studied

Lutein extracts from corn inhibited the mutagenicity of AFB1 in a dose-response manner more efficiently than lutein standard. Dose-response analysis showed that every 300 μg/d increment in dietary luteins intake was associated with a 3% reduction in the risk of nuclear cataract (RR: 0.3%)
