Description

Argon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas that makes up approximately 1% of the Earth's atmosphere. It is the third most abundant gas in the atmosphere after nitrogen and oxygen. Argon is not chemically reactive and is therefore considered inert. It is found in the air and is extracted by fractional distillation of liquid air. Argon is widely used in various industrial applications, such as welding, manufacturing, and lighting. It is also used in lasers, plasma displays, and other scientific instruments. The inert nature of argon makes it useful in applications where reactivity is undesirable, such as in welding, where it acts as a protective gas. It is also used as an inert atmosphere to prevent reactions in other industrial processes. Scientists study argon to better understand its properties and potential applications in various fields. For example, researchers are exploring the use of argon plasma in medicine for sterilization and tissue regeneration. '

Argon: A noble gas with the atomic symbol Ar, atomic number 18, and atomic weight 39.948. It is used in fluorescent tubes and wherever an inert atmosphere is desired and nitrogen cannot be used. [Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), National Library of Medicine, extracted Dec-2023]

Overview

Argon plasma is an effective, safe and easy-to-use technique with a relatively low cost. Argon is cheaper, easy to transport, non-sedating, and mechanistically distinct from xenon. The argon laser is an alternative light source that can be used for the photopolymerization of resin-based dental materials.

Roles (2)

RoleDescription
food packaging gasA food additive that is a (generally inert) gas which is used to envelop foodstuffs during packing and so protect them from unwanted chemical reactions such as food spoilage or oxidation during subsequent transport and storage. The term includes propellant gases, used to expel foods from a container.
neuroprotective agentAny compound that can be used for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.
