Effects

Myelin basic protein (BP) has a perturbing effect on some lipids, causing a decrease in the temperature and enthalpy of the phase transition. BP induces an increased secretory reaction of cells after irritation.

Myelin basic protein (MBP) has been shown to bind calmodulin (CaM) in a specific Ca(2+)-dependent manner via a primary target sequence at its C-terminus [Protein Sci.]. Myelinbasic protein (BP) has the capacity to induce experimental allergic encephalomyelitis in animals as well as to prevent and suppress EAE.

Myelin basic protein (MBP) plays an integral role in the structure and function of the myelin sheath. MBP plays an essential adhesiverole in the formation of compact myelin in the central nervous system (CNS), but not in the peripheral nervoussystem (PNS) Myelin basicprotein as a cause of postvaccinal encephalomyelitis (PVE) due to Semple rabies vaccine has been suggested in previous reports.
