Description

Cerium is a silvery-white, soft, malleable, and ductile lanthanide metal. It is found in various minerals, most notably monazite and bastnaesite. Cerium is the most abundant of the rare earth elements. It is often used in alloys, as a catalyst, and in pigments. Cerium is also used in lighting, as a component of high-intensity discharge lamps and fluorescent lamps. The metal is used in ferrocerium, a type of pyrophoric alloy used in lighters. Cerium oxide is used as a polishing agent for glass and other materials. Cerium is also used in self-cleaning ovens, where it helps to break down food residues. Cerium is a strong reducing agent and is used in the production of other metals, such as titanium. The element is also used in the production of nuclear fuels. Cerium is also being studied for its potential use in renewable energy technologies, such as solar cells and fuel cells.'
