Description

Procyanidins are a type of flavonoid found in many fruits, vegetables, and plants. They are polymers of catechin and epicatechin monomers, linked by C4-C8 bonds. Procyanidins are synthesized through a complex series of enzymatic reactions in plants. They exhibit a variety of biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and cardioprotective effects. Their importance lies in their potential health benefits, which have been investigated in numerous studies. Procyanidins are studied to understand their mechanisms of action, explore their therapeutic applications, and develop new functional foods or nutraceuticals.'

Proanthocyanidins: Dimers and oligomers of flavan-3-ol units (CATECHIN analogs) linked mainly through C4 to C8 bonds to leucoanthocyanidins. They are structurally similar to ANTHOCYANINS but are the result of a different fork in biosynthetic pathways. [Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), National Library of Medicine, extracted Dec-2023]

Effects

Procyanidins have a protective effect of periprosthetic osteolysis caused by TCP wear particles in the mouse calvaia. The mechanism may be mediated by inhibition of oxidative stress and autophagy. Procyanids have been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclero.
