Research Excerpts

Overview

Ammonium chloride (AC) is a weak base that blocks disassembly of reovirus virions by inhibiting acidification of intracellular vacuoles. It is demonstrated to be a permeating electrolyte for human red cells in water or sodium chloride solutions. It has been shown to act as if it contributes osmotic support in the presence of sucrose.

Actions

Ammonium chloride had a lower effect on pathologic than on normal cells, indicating a decrease in the degradative process in otosclerotic bone cells. Ammonium chlorine markedly inhibited the absolute amount of [125I]hGH released from preloaded adipocytes.

Treatment

The ammonium chloride treatment did not reduce virion stability, nor did the treatment prevent virion binding to cells. Ammonium chloride-treated cats had significantly lower blood and urinary pH, and lower blood bicarbonate concentrations.
