Description

Aluminum chloride (AlCl3) is a white, deliquescent solid that is highly soluble in water. It is a common industrial chemical used as a catalyst in organic reactions, such as the Friedel-Crafts alkylation and acylation. Aluminum chloride is produced by the reaction of aluminum metal with chlorine gas. It is a Lewis acid, meaning it can accept electron pairs. This property makes it a useful catalyst in various reactions. Aluminum chloride is also used in the production of aluminum metal, as a mordant in dyeing, and as a dehydrating agent.'
