Description

Fluorine (F) is the most electronegative element in the periodic table, a pale yellow, highly reactive gas. It is found in nature as the fluoride ion, typically combined with other elements in minerals. Fluorine is not found free in nature because of its high reactivity. The element is produced industrially by electrolysis of potassium hydrogen fluoride (KHF2) dissolved in anhydrous hydrofluoric acid (HF). Fluorine is used in the production of many important compounds, including polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), also known as Teflon, which is used in non-stick cookware and other applications. It is also used in the production of pharmaceuticals, refrigerants, and other chemicals. Fluorine is important because of its unique properties, including its high reactivity and its ability to form strong bonds with other elements. It is studied in many scientific fields, including chemistry, physics, and materials science. Fluorine is essential for human health, playing a role in bone and tooth formation. However, excessive fluoride intake can lead to health issues. In dentistry, fluoride is used to prevent tooth decay. Fluorine is also used in the production of nuclear weapons and rocket propellants.'

Fluorine: A nonmetallic, diatomic gas that is a trace element and member of the halogen family. It is used in dentistry as fluoride (FLUORIDES) to prevent dental caries. [Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), National Library of Medicine, extracted Dec-2023]

Actions

Fluorine plays a decisive role not only because of the polarity it induces in organic molecules but also because of its low polarizability and weak propensity for ion solvation. Fluorine (F) plays an important role in dental health and bone formation. New methods for its incorporation into target molecules are of high interest.
