Description

Hematoxylin is a natural dye extracted from the heartwood of the logwood tree (Haematoxylum campechianum). It is a complex molecule with a variety of chemical forms, the most common being hematoxylin itself and its oxidized form, hematein. Hematoxylin is not a stain in its natural form and requires oxidation to hematein, typically by the addition of a mordant, such as aluminum or iron salts. Hematein forms a colored complex with the mordant, which then binds to cellular components. Hematoxylin is commonly used as a nuclear stain in histology, cytology, and pathology because it stains DNA and RNA in a dark blue or purple color. This staining allows researchers to visualize cell nuclei, chromosomes, and other nuclear structures. It is important for studying cell division, differentiation, and other cellular processes. Hematoxylin is also used in other fields, such as botany and zoology, for staining various tissues and organisms.'
