Description

Perylene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) with the formula C20H12. It is a bright yellow solid that is found in coal tar and is also synthesized commercially. Perylene has a planar structure with a large, delocalized pi-electron system. This system gives perylene its characteristic fluorescence, which is strong and blue-violet in color. Perylene has been studied extensively due to its unique electronic and optical properties. It is used in organic electronics, such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), and organic solar cells. Perylene derivatives have been synthesized to enhance its properties for specific applications. For example, perylene diimides (PDIs) are highly fluorescent dyes with excellent thermal and photochemical stability. They are used as pigments, fluorescent probes, and in solar energy applications. The high fluorescence quantum yield of perylene and its derivatives makes them promising candidates for bio-imaging, sensing, and optoelectronic devices. Perylene has also been investigated for its potential as a photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy (PDT) for cancer treatment. Perylene and its derivatives are currently an area of active research and development due to their versatile applications and potential for new discoveries.'

Perylene: A 20-carbon dibenz(de,kl)anthracene that can be viewed as a naphthalene fused to a phenalene or as dinaphthalene. It is used as fluorescent lipid probe in the cytochemistry of membranes and is a polycyclic hydrocarbon pollutant in soil and water. Derivatives may be carcinogenic.
