Description

Technetium is a radioactive element that is not found naturally in significant quantities. It is synthesized in nuclear reactors by bombarding molybdenum with neutrons. Technetium is a silvery-gray metal that is used in a variety of medical applications, including imaging studies and cancer therapy. It is also used in industrial applications, such as in the production of certain alloys. The radioactive nature of technetium allows it to be used as a tracer in medical imaging. For example, technetium-99m is used in a variety of diagnostic procedures, such as bone scans, heart scans, and brain scans. Technetium-99m is a relatively short-lived isotope, which means that it decays quickly, minimizing the amount of radiation exposure to the patient. It is studied extensively due to its wide range of applications in medicine, particularly in nuclear medicine. Technetium is a unique element that has a wide range of applications in various fields, making it an important subject of ongoing research.'

Technetium: The first artificially produced element and a radioactive fission product of URANIUM. Technetium has the atomic symbol Tc, and atomic number 43. All technetium isotopes are radioactive. Technetium 99m (m=metastable) which is the decay product of Molybdenum 99, has a half-life of about 6 hours and is used diagnostically as a radioactive imaging agent. Technetium 99 which is a decay product of technetium 99m, has a half-life of 210,000 years. [Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), National Library of Medicine, extracted Dec-2023]

" There is not a consensus about the possibility of increasement of risk for malignancies associated with the radiolabeled blood cells, so for a more accurate evaluation of the potential oncogenic risk related to the administration of [Tc]Tc labeled red blood cells, radiation dose received by the cells during the labeling process is studied by means of the cytokinesis-blocked micronucleus (CBMN) assay and a dose-response curve constructed by in-vitro external irradiation of blood samples."( Chromosome aberrations during in-vitro labeling of red blood cells with 99mTc: a study with cytokinesis block micronucleus assay in human peripheral blood lymphocytes.
