Description

Promazine is a phenothiazine derivative with antipsychotic properties. It was synthesized in 1951 and was one of the first antipsychotics to be developed. Promazine acts as an antagonist at dopamine receptors in the brain, which is thought to be the mechanism by which it exerts its antipsychotic effects. Promazine has been used to treat a variety of psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, acute psychosis, and anxiety. However, promazine has been largely replaced by newer antipsychotics with fewer side effects. Promazine is still studied as a potential treatment for some conditions, such as Tourette syndrome and chronic pain. It is also being investigated as a possible therapeutic agent for Alzheimer's disease.'

Promazine: A phenothiazine with actions similar to CHLORPROMAZINE but with less antipsychotic activity. It is primarily used in short-term treatment of disturbed behavior and as an antiemetic. [Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), National Library of Medicine, extracted Dec-2023]

promazine : A phenothiazine deriative in which the phenothiazine tricycle has a 3-(dimethylaminopropyl) group at the N-10 position.
