Description

Dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) is a quaternary ammonium surfactant with the formula CH3(CH2)11N(CH3)3Br. It is a colorless solid that is soluble in water and other polar solvents. DTAB is used as a cationic surfactant in a variety of applications, including detergents, fabric softeners, and hair conditioners. It is also used as a biocide and disinfectant. DTAB is synthesized by the reaction of dodecyl bromide with trimethylamine. DTAB is a strong cationic surfactant, which means that it has a positive charge. This charge allows DTAB to interact with negatively charged molecules, such as proteins and DNA. DTAB can disrupt cell membranes and can also denature proteins. DTAB is studied because it is a potent antimicrobial agent and has the ability to disrupt cell membranes. DTAB is also used in research to study the properties of surfactants and the effects of surfactants on biological systems.'
