Description

3-fluorotyrosine is a synthetic analog of the amino acid tyrosine. It is synthesized by the reaction of tyrosine with fluorine gas. 3-fluorotyrosine has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of tyrosine hydroxylase, the enzyme responsible for the synthesis of dopamine. This makes it a potential treatment for Parkinson's disease. 3-fluorotyrosine has also been shown to be a substrate for the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase, which converts phenylalanine to tyrosine. This suggests that 3-fluorotyrosine may be a useful tool for studying phenylalanine hydroxylase activity. 3-fluorotyrosine is studied because it has potential therapeutic applications and because it can be used as a tool to study the biochemistry of tyrosine and dopamine metabolism.'

Drug Classes (4)

ClassDescription
fluoroamino acidAn organofluorine compound that consists of an amino acid substituted by a fluoro group.
tyrosine derivativeAn amino acid derivative resulting from reaction of tyrosine at the amino group or the carboxy group, any substitution of phenyl hydrogens, or from the replacement of any hydrogen of tyrosine by a heteroatom. The definition normally excludes peptides containing tyrosine residues.
non-proteinogenic alpha-amino acidAny alpha-amino acid which is not a member of the group of 23 proteinogenic amino acids.
fluorophenolA halophenol that is any phenol containing one or more covalently bonded fluorine atoms.
