1,3-dithiolane
1,3-Dithiolane is a heterocyclic organic compound with the formula C3H6S2. It is a colorless liquid with a characteristic odor. 1,3-Dithiolane is a versatile building block in organic synthesis, particularly in the preparation of sulfur-containing compounds. It is also used as a reagent in the synthesis of polymers and pharmaceuticals. The compound is known to be a useful precursor to various sulfur-containing compounds, and its synthesis is often carried out by the reaction of 1,2-dibromoethane with sodium sulfide. 1,3-Dithiolane can act as a protecting group for carbonyl compounds, forming a stable cyclic thioacetal. This property is valuable in organic synthesis, as it allows for the selective modification of carbonyl groups while leaving other functional groups untouched.'
