Description

Docosanol is a long-chain saturated fatty alcohol that is a topical antiviral agent effective against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2). It is available over the counter as a cream or ointment for the treatment of cold sores and genital herpes. Docosanol is thought to work by inhibiting the fusion of the virus with the host cell membrane, preventing viral entry. It is generally well-tolerated, with few side effects. Docosanol is synthesized through a multi-step process starting with a long-chain fatty acid. Docosanol is studied for its effectiveness in treating HSV-1 and HSV-2, as well as its potential as a treatment for other viral infections. Research continues to investigate its mechanism of action and potential therapeutic applications.'
