Description

Holmium (Ho) is a rare earth element. It is a silvery-white, malleable, and ductile metal. It is found in small quantities in the minerals monazite and gadolinite. Holmium is not found in nature in its pure form. It is obtained by reducing holmium oxide with lanthanum. Holmium has a wide range of applications, including:
* Lasers: Holmium lasers are used in medicine for surgery, dentistry, and dermatology. They are also used in industry for cutting, welding, and drilling.
* Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Holmium isotopes are used as contrast agents in MRI.
* Nuclear Reactors: Holmium is used as a control rod material in nuclear reactors.
* Neutron Capture Therapy: Holmium-166 is used in neutron capture therapy, a type of cancer treatment.
* Other Applications: Holmium is also used in making high-intensity magnets, in optical fibers, and in certain types of glass.
Holmium is an important element for research because of its unique properties. For example, holmium has a high magnetic moment, which makes it useful in magnetic materials. Holmium also has a high neutron capture cross section, which makes it useful in nuclear applications.
Holmium is a relatively expensive element, but it is becoming more widely available as new extraction and purification techniques are developed.'

Holmium: An element of the rare earth family of metals. It has the atomic symbol Ho, atomic number 67, and atomic weight 164.93. [Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), National Library of Medicine, extracted Dec-2023]

Dosage Studied

Holmium:YAG laser is used at an optimal dosage (optimal joule and Hertz) with an optimal technique (keeping the handpiece at an appropriate angle and distance) Holmium laser lithotripsy does not cause osteonecrosis.Dexmedetomidine administration has no influence on postoperative cognitive dysfunction.
