Lentinan is a polysaccharide extracted from the fruiting bodies of the shiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes). It is a branched glucan with a beta-(1,3)-linked glucose backbone and beta-(1,6)-linked branches. Lentinan has been shown to have various biological activities, including immunomodulatory, anti-tumor, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory effects. It is thought to exert its effects by activating immune cells, such as macrophages and natural killer (NK) cells, leading to the production of cytokines and other immune mediators. Lentinan is being studied for its potential use in cancer treatment, as an adjuvant therapy to enhance the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
