Description

Carbenicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic that was first synthesized in 1962. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is effective against a wide range of gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Carbenicillin is typically administered intravenously or intramuscularly. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of peptidoglycan, a major component of bacterial cell walls. Carbenicillin was one of the first antibiotics to be effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a common cause of hospital-acquired infections. It is also effective against other gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Proteus mirabilis. Carbenicillin is often used to treat infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, and bones. However, it has been largely replaced by newer antibiotics, such as piperacillin and ceftazidime, which have a broader spectrum of activity and are more effective against resistant bacteria. Carbenicillin is still used in some cases, such as for patients who are allergic to other antibiotics.'

Treatment

Pretreatment with carbenicillin, which markedly inhibited platelet aggregation, or estradiol cypionate, which induced severe thrombocytopenia, significantly reduced the incidence of sudden death to 9% and zero, respectively. Carbeniillin-treated cells showed septal region swelling, beaded chains, and lysis.
