peristalsis

Definition

Target type: biologicalprocess

A wavelike sequence of involuntary muscular contraction and relaxation that passes along a tubelike structure, such as the intestine, impelling the contents onwards. [ISBN:0198506732]

Peristalsis is a series of coordinated muscle contractions that move food through the digestive tract. It begins in the esophagus, where circular muscles contract behind the food bolus, pushing it forward. Longitudinal muscles then contract, shortening the esophagus and propelling the food further. This wave-like motion continues through the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine, effectively moving food along the digestive tract.

The process involves two main types of muscle: circular and longitudinal. Circular muscles encircle the digestive tract and their contraction constricts the lumen, creating a pressure wave that propels food forward. Longitudinal muscles run along the length of the digestive tract and their contraction shortens the segment, further pushing the food forward.

The coordinated contraction of these muscles is controlled by the enteric nervous system, which is a network of nerves embedded in the wall of the digestive tract. This system receives signals from the brain and spinal cord, as well as local signals from the digestive tract itself, to regulate the speed and strength of peristalsis.

Peristalsis is essential for the efficient digestion and absorption of nutrients. It allows food to be mixed with digestive enzymes, ensuring that it is broken down into smaller molecules that can be absorbed by the body. The process also helps to move waste products through the digestive tract, ultimately leading to their elimination from the body.'

clozapineclozapine : A benzodiazepine that is 5H-dibenzo[b,e][1,4]diazepine substituted by a chloro group at position 8 and a 4-methylpiperazin-1-yl group at position 11. It is a second generation antipsychotic used in the treatment of psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia.

Clozapine: A tricylic dibenzodiazepine, classified as an atypical antipsychotic agent. It binds several types of central nervous system receptors, and displays a unique pharmacological profile. Clozapine is a serotonin antagonist, with strong binding to 5-HT 2A/2C receptor subtype. It also displays strong affinity to several dopaminergic receptors, but shows only weak antagonism at the dopamine D2 receptor, a receptor commonly thought to modulate neuroleptic activity. Agranulocytosis is a major adverse effect associated with administration of this agent.
