Description

Lobeline is an alkaloid found in the Indian tobacco plant (Lobelia inflata). It is structurally similar to nicotine and acts as a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonist. Lobeline has been studied for its potential therapeutic applications in smoking cessation and as a respiratory stimulant. It is believed to work by stimulating the release of dopamine in the brain, which can lead to a feeling of reward and satisfaction, similar to the effects of nicotine. However, lobeline has a shorter duration of action than nicotine, making it less effective for smoking cessation. Lobeline is also known to have adverse effects, such as nausea, vomiting, and increased heart rate. Its use is generally discouraged due to its potential toxicity and the availability of safer alternatives for smoking cessation. Research into lobeline continues in an effort to understand its potential therapeutic uses and minimize its side effects.'

Lobeline: An alkaloid that has actions similar to NICOTINE on nicotinic cholinergic receptors but is less potent. It has been proposed for a variety of therapeutic uses including in respiratory disorders, peripheral vascular disorders, insomnia, and smoking cessation. [Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), National Library of Medicine, extracted Dec-2023]

(-)-lobeline : An optically active piperidine alkaloid having a 2-oxo-2-phenylethyl substituent at the 2-position and a 2-hydroxy-2-phenylethyl group at the 6-position. [Chemical Entities of Biological Interest (ChEBI), Hastings J, Owen G, Dekker A, Ennis M, Kale N, Muthukrishnan V, Turner S, Swainston N, Mendes P, Steinbeck C. (2016).
