Research Excerpts

Overview

Iberiotoxin (IbTx) is a scorpion venom peptide. It inhibits BK Ca2+-activated K+ channels with high affinity and specificity.

ExcerptReferenceRelevance
"Iberiotoxin (IbTX) is a remarkably selective alpha-K toxin peptide (alpha-KTx) inhibitor of the maxi-K channel. "( Glycine 30 in iberiotoxin is a critical determinant of its specificity for maxi-K versus K(V) channels.

Effects

ExcerptReferenceRelevance
"Iberiotoxin (IbTX), which has been found to block maxi K+ currents more selectively than does charybdotoxin, reversibly blocked Ca(2+)-activated K+ current, with a half-maximal dose of about 100 nM in 8/13 OB output neurones tested."( Whole-cell K+ currents in identified olfactory bulb output neurones of rats.

Treatment

Iberiotoxin (BKCa blocker, IBTX) significantly increased PE-mediated vascular contractions in the control, not in the HS group. In iberiot toxin- or TEA-treated piglets, dilations to CO and HLL could not be restored by either iloprost or sodium nitroprusside.
