Description

Bromates are salts containing the bromate anion (BrO3−). They are strong oxidizing agents, and are used in various industrial processes, including the production of dyes, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides. Bromates can be formed as byproducts of water treatment using ozone. While bromate is not considered to be a direct carcinogen, the World Health Organization (WHO) has set a guideline value of 10 μg/L (micrograms per liter) in drinking water. Research on bromates focuses on their environmental fate, their potential toxicity to humans and wildlife, and the development of methods to remove them from drinking water. The main method for bromate removal is the use of activated carbon filters.'
