Description

Propylene carbonate (PC) is a colorless, odorless, and hygroscopic liquid that is widely used as a solvent, electrolyte, and plasticizer. It is synthesized by the reaction of propylene oxide with carbon dioxide under pressure and in the presence of a catalyst. PC is a highly polar aprotic solvent with a high dielectric constant, making it an excellent solvent for a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds. It is also non-toxic and biodegradable, making it an environmentally friendly solvent. PC is an important component in lithium-ion batteries, where it serves as an electrolyte solvent. Its high ionic conductivity and wide electrochemical window make it suitable for high-performance batteries. It is also used in various applications such as:
- Polymers: as a plasticizer and solvent in the production of polycarbonate and other polymers.
- Coatings: as a solvent and additive in paints and coatings.
- Electrochemistry: as an electrolyte in fuel cells and other electrochemical devices.
- Cosmetics: as a solvent in cosmetics and personal care products.
- Other: PC is studied for its potential use in various applications, including carbon capture and storage, gas separation, and biofuel production. Its low volatility and high thermal stability make it an ideal solvent for these applications.'
