The mitochondrial membrane is a double-layered structure that encloses the mitochondrial matrix. It is composed of two distinct membranes: the outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM) and the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM).

**Outer Mitochondrial Membrane (OMM)**
- Highly permeable to small molecules due to the presence of porins, which are large protein channels.
- Contains enzymes involved in lipid metabolism, such as monoamine oxidase and fatty acyl-CoA synthetase.
- Serves as a barrier between the cytosol and the intermembrane space.

**Inner Mitochondrial Membrane (IMM)**
- Highly folded and forms cristae, which increase its surface area.
- Contains a high concentration of proteins, including electron transport chain complexes, ATP synthase, and carriers for specific metabolites.
- Impermeable to most ions and molecules, requiring specific transport proteins.
- Serves as the site of ATP synthesis through oxidative phosphorylation.

**Intermembrane Space**
- The space between the OMM and IMM.
- Contains enzymes involved in apoptosis, such as cytochrome c.
- Contains a high concentration of protons, which are pumped across the IMM during oxidative phosphorylation.

**Matrix**
- The compartment enclosed by the IMM.
- Contains enzymes involved in the citric acid cycle, fatty acid oxidation, and amino acid metabolism.
- Contains mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), ribosomes, and other components necessary for protein synthesis.
