Description

Acriflavine chloride is a synthetic dye that is an effective antimicrobial agent. It has been used to treat bacterial and fungal infections, and has also been used as a disinfectant. It is also known to be an effective dye for staining and microscopy. Acriflavine chloride is typically synthesized by reacting proflavine with hydrochloric acid. Acriflavine chloride inhibits bacterial growth by interfering with DNA replication and RNA synthesis. It is also known to be cytotoxic to mammalian cells. Acriflavine chloride has been studied extensively for its antimicrobial properties. It has been shown to be effective against a wide range of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Acriflavine chloride has also been shown to be effective against fungi, including Candida albicans. Acriflavine chloride is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that has a long history of use in the treatment of infections. However, its use has declined in recent years due to the emergence of antibiotic resistance. Acriflavine chloride is still used in some applications, such as the treatment of skin infections and the disinfection of medical devices.'

3,6-diamino-10-methylacridinium chloride : The 10-methochloride salt of 3,6-diaminoacridine. Note that a mixture of this compound with 3,6-diaminoacridine (proflavine) is known as acriflavine or neutral acriflavine. Roles (5)

RoleDescription
antibacterial agentA substance (or active part thereof) that kills or slows the growth of bacteria.
antiseptic drugA substance used locally on humans and other animals to destroy harmful microorganisms or to inhibit their activity (cf. disinfectants, which destroy microorganisms found on non-living objects, and antibiotics, which can be transported through the lymphatic system to destroy bacteria within the body).
carcinogenic agentA role played by a chemical compound which is known to induce a process of carcinogenesis by corrupting normal cellular pathways, leading to the acquistion of tumoral capabilities.
intercalatorA role played by a chemical agent which exhibits the capability of occupying space between DNA base pairs due to particular properties in size, shape and charge. Intercalation of chemical compounds in DNA helix can result in replication errors (shift, mutation) or DNA damages.
histological dyeA dye used in microscopic or electron microscopic examination of cells and tissues to give contrast and to highlight particular features of interest, such as nuclei and cytoplasm.
