Description

Loperamide hydrochloride is a synthetic opioid that acts as a potent antidiarrheal agent. It is chemically related to meperidine and is classified as a piperidine derivative. Loperamide is not readily absorbed into the central nervous system, which explains its lack of significant CNS side effects. It primarily exerts its antidiarrheal effect by binding to opioid receptors in the gut wall, reducing the rate of intestinal motility and increasing the absorption of water and electrolytes in the gut. Loperamide is used to treat acute and chronic diarrhea, including traveler's diarrhea and diarrhea associated with irritable bowel syndrome. It is also effective in reducing the frequency of bowel movements in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. The study of loperamide is ongoing, focusing on its potential use in other conditions, such as reducing the frequency of bowel movements in patients with chronic constipation and its potential anti-cancer effects. '

loperamide hydrochloride : A hydrochloride obtained by combining loperamide with one equivalent of hydrochloric acid. Used for treatment of diarrhoea resulting from gastroenteritis or inflammatory bowel disease.
