pargyline hydrochloride

Description Research Excerpts Clinical Trials Roles Classes Pathways Study Profile Bioassays Related Drugs Related Conditions Protein Interactions Research Growth Market Indicators

Pargyline hydrochloride is an irreversible monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) that was originally developed as an antihypertensive medication. It acts by inhibiting the enzyme monoamine oxidase, which is responsible for breaking down neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. This leads to increased levels of these neurotransmitters in the brain, which can have a variety of effects, including mood elevation, increased alertness, and decreased appetite. Pargyline was also studied for its potential to treat Parkinson's disease, but it was found to be less effective than other medications. Pargyline is no longer widely used as an antihypertensive due to concerns about its potential for drug interactions and its side effects, such as liver damage. However, it is still being studied for its potential to treat other conditions, such as depression, anxiety, and chronic pain.'
