Description

Dichlorophen, also known as 2,2'-dichloro-4,4'-dihydroxydiphenylmethane, is a synthetic organic compound used as an antimicrobial agent. It is a white crystalline solid with a melting point of 154-156°C. Dichlorophen is synthesized via a reaction involving the condensation of formaldehyde with phenol in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The antimicrobial action of dichlorophen is primarily attributed to its ability to disrupt bacterial cell membranes, leading to cell death. It exhibits broad-spectrum activity against a wide range of bacteria, including gram-positive and gram-negative strains. Dichlorophen has been used in various applications, including as a fungicide, antibacterial agent in soaps and detergents, and preservative in food products. Its effectiveness and relatively low toxicity have made it a popular choice for antimicrobial applications. However, concerns regarding its potential environmental impact and the emergence of resistant strains have led to its reduced usage in some areas. Research on dichlorophen focuses on its potential applications in medicine, agriculture, and other industries, as well as investigating alternative methods of synthesis and safer substitutes to minimize its environmental impact.'

Dichlorophen: Nontoxic laxative vermicide effective for taenia infestation. It tends to produce colic and nausea. It is also used as a veterinary fungicide, anthelmintic, and antiprotozoan. (From Merck, 11th ed.) [Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), National Library of Medicine, extracted Dec-2023]
