liver regeneration

Definition

Target type: biologicalprocess

The regrowth of lost or destroyed liver. [GOC:gap, PMID:19447520]

Liver regeneration is a remarkable process by which the liver, a vital organ responsible for diverse metabolic functions, can repair itself after injury or partial removal. This intricate process involves a coordinated interplay of multiple cell types, signaling pathways, and growth factors.

The initial step involves the recognition of tissue damage and the activation of resident liver cells, primarily hepatocytes. These cells sense the injury through various mechanisms, including the release of growth factors and cytokines from damaged cells. The activation of hepatocytes triggers a cascade of events, leading to their proliferation and differentiation into new liver cells.

One key player in liver regeneration is the growth factor Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF), which is secreted from non-parenchymal cells, including stellate cells and Kupffer cells. HGF binds to its receptor, c-Met, on hepatocytes, stimulating their proliferation and inhibiting apoptosis.

Another crucial factor is transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha), which activates the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) on hepatocytes, promoting cell cycle progression and survival.

In addition to these growth factors, the liver regeneration process involves a complex interplay of signaling pathways, including the Wnt, Notch, and Hippo pathways. These pathways regulate cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival, ensuring proper liver tissue regeneration.

Furthermore, the liver's unique microenvironment plays a critical role in this process. The extracellular matrix (ECM) provides structural support and releases signaling molecules that regulate cell behavior.

As the new liver cells proliferate and differentiate, they form new liver tissue, replacing the damaged portion. This process is tightly regulated to ensure proper tissue architecture and function.

Liver regeneration is a highly efficient and dynamic process, enabling the liver to maintain its vital functions even after significant injury. This remarkable regenerative capacity highlights the liver's resilience and emphasizes its importance in overall health and well-being.'

Vitamin B9 refers to the many forms of folic acid and its derivatives, including tetrahydrofolic acid (the active form), methyltetrahydrofolate (the primary form found in blood), methenyltetrahydrofolate, folinic acid amongst others. They are present in abundance in green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, and animal products. Lack of vitamin B9 leads to anemia, a condition in which the body cannot produce sufficient number of red blood cells. Symptoms of vitamin B9 deficiency include fatigue, muscle weakness, and pale skin.
