Description

Direct Red 81 is a synthetic azo dye with the chemical name 3,3'-[(1,4-phenylene)bis(azo)]bis(4-amino-1-naphthalenesulfonic acid). It is produced through the diazotization of 4-aminobenzenesulfonic acid followed by coupling with 1-amino-4-naphthalenesulfonic acid. Direct Red 81 is used in a variety of applications, including dyeing textiles, paper, and leather. It is also used as a food coloring agent, but its use is restricted in many countries due to potential health concerns. Studies on Direct Red 81 have focused on its genotoxicity, mutagenicity, and carcinogenicity. It has been shown to induce DNA damage and mutations in vitro and in vivo, and it is classified as a possible human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The study of Direct Red 81 is important for understanding the potential health risks associated with exposure to azo dyes.'
