Description

Diethyl phthalate (DEP) is a colorless, odorless liquid that is used as a plasticizer to soften and increase the flexibility of plastics. It is also used as a solvent and in perfumes. DEP is synthesized by reacting phthalic anhydride with ethanol. DEP is considered to be a potential endocrine disruptor and has been linked to reproductive problems in animals. It is also a known skin irritant and allergen. DEP is studied because it is widely used in consumer products and has been found in the environment and in human tissues. Research is ongoing to determine the potential health risks associated with exposure to DEP.'
