Description

Gallium chloride (GaCl3) is a white, hygroscopic solid that readily forms a dimer in the gas phase. It can be synthesized by reacting gallium metal with chlorine gas at elevated temperatures. Gallium chloride is a Lewis acid and readily reacts with water to form hydrochloric acid. It finds application in various areas, including the synthesis of other gallium compounds, as a catalyst in organic reactions, and as a precursor for gallium-based semiconductors. Gallium chloride is also used in the production of gallium arsenide (GaAs), a key material in the manufacturing of lasers, solar cells, and high-frequency transistors. The study of gallium chloride is important due to its diverse applications in chemistry and materials science.'
