valrubicin

Description Research Excerpts Clinical Trials Roles Classes Pathways Study Profile Bioassays Related Drugs Related Conditions Protein Interactions Research Growth Market Indicators

Valrubicin is an anthracycline antibiotic that was originally isolated from the bacterium Streptomyces valrubidus. It is a synthetic analog of doxorubicin and epirubicin, and it acts as a DNA intercalating agent, inhibiting DNA synthesis and causing cell death. Valrubicin is a potent antitumor agent that is used to treat superficial bladder cancer. Its unique pharmacologic properties allow it to concentrate in the bladder after intravesical administration, which limits systemic toxicity. Valrubicin is studied for its potential efficacy against various other cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, and solid tumors. It is also under investigation for its potential role in the treatment of viral infections and autoimmune diseases.'
