Description

4-Phenylphenol, also known as p-phenylphenol, is a white crystalline solid with a distinctive odor. It is an important industrial chemical used as a fungicide, bactericide, and wood preservative. 4-phenylphenol is synthesized by the reaction of phenol with benzene in the presence of a catalyst, such as aluminum chloride. Its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity arises from its ability to disrupt cell membranes and inhibit enzyme activity. 4-phenylphenol is also an effective antioxidant, scavenging free radicals and protecting against oxidative damage. However, it has been linked to potential health hazards, including skin irritation and respiratory problems. Research focuses on understanding its environmental fate, its potential for bioaccumulation, and developing safer alternatives for its applications.'
