Description

3-tert-Butyl-4-hydroxyanisole (BHA) is a synthetic antioxidant commonly used as a food additive to prevent rancidity. It is synthesized by reacting p-methoxyphenol (anisole) with tert-butyl alcohol in the presence of a strong acid catalyst. BHA exhibits antioxidant properties by scavenging free radicals and inhibiting lipid oxidation. It is particularly effective in preventing the oxidation of fats and oils, extending their shelf life. BHA has been extensively studied due to its widespread use in food products, and its safety has been evaluated by regulatory agencies. However, some concerns have been raised regarding potential health effects, including allergic reactions and possible carcinogenic properties. Despite these concerns, BHA remains a widely used food additive, subject to strict regulations and safety assessments.'
