Description

Phenetole, also known as ethyl phenyl ether, is an organic compound with the formula C6H5OCH2CH3. It is a colorless liquid with a sweet, aromatic odor. It is a common starting material in organic synthesis, and is used in the production of pharmaceuticals, dyes, and other chemicals. Phenetole is synthesized by the Williamson ether synthesis, which involves the reaction of phenol with ethyl bromide in the presence of a base. It can also be prepared by the dehydration of ethanol and phenol in the presence of a strong acid. Phenetole is a relatively unreactive compound, but it can undergo a variety of reactions, including alkylation, acylation, and halogenation. It is studied for its potential use as a solvent and as a precursor to other chemicals.'
