Description

Citronellal, (r)-isomer, is a chiral monoterpenoid aldehyde that occurs naturally in essential oils of various plants, including citronella grass, lemon eucalyptus, and palmarosa. It is an important constituent of many fragrances and insect repellents. The (r)-isomer exhibits higher insect repellent activity compared to the (s)-isomer. It is also known for its antimicrobial and antifungal properties. The compound has been investigated for its potential as a natural insecticide and for its role in plant defense mechanisms. The synthesis of citronellal, (r)-isomer, can be achieved through various methods, including asymmetric hydrogenation of citronellal and enzymatic resolution of racemic citronellal.'
