D-alanine

Description Research Excerpts Clinical Trials Roles Classes Pathways Study Profile Bioassays Related Drugs Related Conditions Protein Interactions Research Growth Market Indicators

D-alanine is an enantiomer of the common amino acid L-alanine. It is found in bacterial cell walls and is important in bacterial peptidoglycan synthesis. D-alanine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid, meaning it is not found in proteins. It is synthesized from L-alanine by a specific enzyme called alanine racemase. D-alanine is also a component of some antibiotics, such as vancomycin and teicoplanin. D-alanine is studied because of its role in bacterial cell wall synthesis and its potential as a therapeutic target for the development of new antibiotics.'
