Description

Pyrrolnitrin is a naturally occurring antibiotic produced by the bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that has been shown to inhibit the growth of a variety of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. Pyrrolnitrin's mechanism of action involves inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell wall components, particularly peptidoglycans. Pyrrolnitrin is synthesized by a multi-step biosynthetic pathway that involves the condensation of tryptophan with a nitrile compound. The biosynthesis of pyrrolnitrin is tightly regulated by environmental factors, such as the presence of nutrients and the presence of other microorganisms. Pyrrolnitrin has been studied extensively as a potential antimicrobial agent. Due to its effectiveness against a wide range of microorganisms, its low toxicity to humans, and its ability to be produced by microorganisms, pyrrolnitrin has the potential to be developed into a new antibiotic drug. However, further research is needed to understand its pharmacokinetic properties and its potential side effects. '

Pyrrolnitrin: 3-Chloro-4-(3-chloro-2-nitrophenyl)pyrrole. Antifungal antibiotic isolated from Pseudomonas pyrrocinia. It is effective mainly against Trichophyton, Microsporium, Epidermophyton, and Penicillium. [Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), National Library of Medicine, extracted Dec-2023]

Drug Classes (4)

ClassDescription
pyrrolesAn azole that includes only one N atom and no other heteroatom as a part of the aromatic skeleton.
monochlorobenzenesAny member of the class of chlorobenzenes containing a mono- or poly-substituted benzene ring in which only one substituent is chlorine.
C-nitro compoundA nitro compound having the nitro group (-NO2) attached to a carbon atom.
alkaloidAny of the naturally occurring, basic nitrogen compounds (mostly heterocyclic) occurring mostly in the plant kingdom, but also found in bacteria, fungi, and animals. By extension, certain neutral compounds biogenetically related to basic alkaloids are also classed as alkaloids. Amino acids, peptides, proteins, nucleotides, nucleic acids, amino sugars and antibiotics are not normally regarded as alkaloids. Compounds in which the nitrogen is exocyclic (dopamine, mescaline, serotonin, etc.) are usually classed as amines rather than alkaloids.
