Zinc carbonate (ZnCO3) is an inorganic compound that occurs naturally as the mineral smithsonite. It is a white, odorless solid that is insoluble in water but soluble in acids. Zinc carbonate is synthesized by reacting a soluble zinc salt with a carbonate salt. It is used in a variety of applications, including as a pigment, a filler in plastics and rubber, and a component of animal feed. Zinc carbonate is also used in the production of zinc oxide and zinc chloride. It is studied because of its potential use in the treatment of zinc deficiency and as a source of zinc for industrial applications. Zinc carbonate is also of interest for its potential use in environmental remediation, as it can be used to remove heavy metals from contaminated water.'
