Description

Mefruside is a loop diuretic medication. It is used to treat edema caused by heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney disease. Mefruside works by blocking the reabsorption of sodium and chloride in the kidneys. This causes more water to be excreted in the urine, which reduces edema. Mefruside is available as a tablet and is usually taken once a day. It is a potent diuretic and can cause dehydration if not used carefully. Common side effects include dizziness, headache, and muscle cramps. Mefruside is generally well-tolerated, but it should not be used by people with certain medical conditions, such as low blood pressure or kidney disease. It is important to talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of mefruside before starting this medication.'

Mefruside: A benzene-sulfonamide-furan. It is used as a diuretic that affects the concentrating ability of the KIDNEY, increases SODIUM CHLORIDE excretion, but may not spare POTASSIUM. It inhibits CARBONIC ANHYDRASES and may increase the blood URIC ACID level. [Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), National Library of Medicine, extracted Dec-2023]
