The process begins with the detection of a chemical stimulus by specific receptors on the cell surface. These receptors can be transmembrane proteins, such as G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), that bind to external ligands, triggering a cascade of intracellular signaling events.
Once a chemical gradient is detected, the cell initiates a signaling pathway that ultimately leads to the activation of motor proteins. The coordinated movement of these motor proteins generates forces that propel the cell in a specific direction.
The direction of movement is determined by the gradient of the chemoattractant or chemorepellent. Chemoattractants are chemical signals that draw cells towards them, while chemorepellents push cells away. The cell continuously samples its environment, comparing the concentration of the chemical signal at different points on its surface. This allows the cell to orient itself and move up the concentration gradient of the attractant or down the gradient of the repellent.
