cellular response to ATP

Definition

Target type: biologicalprocess

Any process that results in a change in state or activity of a cell (in terms of movement, secretion, enzyme production, gene expression, etc.) as a result of an ATP (adenosine 5'-triphosphate) stimulus. [GOC:mah]

Cellular response to ATP is a complex process involving a variety of signaling pathways and cellular mechanisms. ATP, a ubiquitous molecule in living organisms, acts as an intracellular energy carrier and as a signaling molecule, triggering diverse cellular responses.

The detection of extracellular ATP is initiated by purinergic receptors, a family of transmembrane proteins located on the cell surface. These receptors bind to ATP, initiating downstream signaling cascades. Two main types of purinergic receptors are involved in ATP signaling: P2X receptors and P2Y receptors.

P2X receptors are ligand-gated ion channels that open upon ATP binding, allowing the influx of cations, primarily sodium and calcium, into the cell. This influx alters the cell's membrane potential and can trigger a variety of cellular responses, including depolarization, muscle contraction, and neurotransmitter release.

P2Y receptors, on the other hand, are G protein-coupled receptors. Upon ATP binding, they activate downstream signaling pathways through the G protein cascade. This activation can lead to the production of second messengers, such as inositol triphosphate (IP3) and diacylglycerol (DAG), which in turn trigger various cellular responses, including calcium mobilization, enzyme activation, and gene expression.

The cellular response to ATP is highly context-dependent, varying depending on the cell type, the specific receptor involved, and the concentration of ATP. In some cases, ATP can act as a neurotransmitter, regulating neuronal activity and synaptic transmission. In other cases, ATP can act as a growth factor, promoting cell proliferation and survival. In immune cells, ATP can trigger inflammation and the release of cytokines.

The precise mechanisms of ATP signaling are still being actively investigated, but it is clear that ATP plays a critical role in a wide range of cellular processes, including energy metabolism, cell signaling, neurotransmission, and immune responses.'
