Description

Alpha-acetolactate (AAL) is a branched-chain α-keto acid that is an important intermediate in the biosynthesis of valine, leucine, and isoleucine. It is formed from the condensation of two molecules of pyruvate by the enzyme acetolactate synthase. AAL is a substrate for the enzyme acetolactate decarboxylase, which catalyzes the decarboxylation of AAL to form 2-ketobutyrate. AAL is also a precursor to the dipeptide valine, which is an essential amino acid for humans. AAL is produced by a variety of organisms, including bacteria, fungi, and plants. It is also a key intermediate in the production of several commercially important products, such as fuel ethanol, lactic acid, and biodegradable plastics. AAL is studied because it is a key intermediate in the biosynthesis of branched-chain amino acids and because it has potential applications in the production of biofuels and other valuable products.
