photoreceptor outer segment

Definition

Target type: cellularcomponent

The outer segment of a vertebrate photoreceptor that contains a stack of membrane discs embedded with photoreceptor proteins. [GOC:cilia, GOC:krc, GOC:pde, ISBN:0824072820, PMID:19501669, PMID:26574505, PMID:6771304]

The photoreceptor outer segment is a highly specialized cellular compartment located in the outer segment of photoreceptor cells, which are responsible for light detection in the retina. It is composed of a stack of flattened, membrane-bound discs, resembling a stack of coins. These discs contain the light-sensitive photopigments, rhodopsin in rods and photopsin in cones, that initiate the visual transduction cascade. The outer segment is continually renewed through a process called disc shedding, where old discs are shed from the tip of the outer segment and phagocytosed by retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. The outer segment is also characterized by a unique structural organization, with a high density of tightly packed discs, ensuring efficient light absorption and signal transduction. The disc membrane is rich in lipids, including phospholipids and cholesterol, and proteins, including rhodopsin, transducin, and phosphodiesterase. This unique composition allows for efficient light capture and signal transduction.'

clozapineclozapine : A benzodiazepine that is 5H-dibenzo[b,e][1,4]diazepine substituted by a chloro group at position 8 and a 4-methylpiperazin-1-yl group at position 11. It is a second generation antipsychotic used in the treatment of psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia.

Clozapine: A tricylic dibenzodiazepine, classified as an atypical antipsychotic agent. It binds several types of central nervous system receptors, and displays a unique pharmacological profile. Clozapine is a serotonin antagonist, with strong binding to 5-HT 2A/2C receptor subtype. It also displays strong affinity to several dopaminergic receptors, but shows only weak antagonism at the dopamine D2 receptor, a receptor commonly thought to modulate neuroleptic activity. Agranulocytosis is a major adverse effect associated with administration of this agent.
