Description

Girard's reagent T is a reagent used in organic chemistry for the selective isolation and purification of carbonyl compounds, such as aldehydes and ketones. It is a hydrazide derivative of trimethylammonium chloride, with the chemical formula [(CH3)3NCH2C(=NH)NH2]Cl. The reagent was developed by Albert Girard and Jean-Claude Tcherniac in 1936. Girard's reagent T reacts with carbonyl compounds to form water-soluble derivatives known as Girard's T hydrazones, which can be easily separated from other non-carbonyl components by extraction with water. This technique is particularly useful for the separation of carbonyl compounds from mixtures containing other functional groups, such as alcohols, esters, or acids. The reaction of Girard's reagent T with carbonyl compounds is reversible, and the original carbonyl compound can be regenerated by treatment with dilute acid. The reaction is specific for carbonyl compounds, making Girard's reagent T a valuable tool in organic synthesis and analysis. '
