Description

Mesoxalic acid, also known as ketomalonic acid, is a dicarboxylic acid with the formula HOOC-CO-COOH. It is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water. Mesoxalic acid is a strong acid and is a useful reagent in organic chemistry. It is synthesized by oxidation of tartaric acid or by hydrolysis of alloxan. Mesoxalic acid is a key intermediate in the biosynthesis of pyrimidines and purines. It is also a potential precursor to other important compounds, including oxalic acid and glyoxylic acid. Mesoxalic acid has been investigated for its potential biological activity, including its ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. It is also a substrate for a number of enzymes, including glycolate oxidase and lactate dehydrogenase.'
