phagocytic vesicle

Definition

Target type: cellularcomponent

A membrane-bounded intracellular vesicle that arises from the ingestion of particulate material by phagocytosis. [GOC:go_curators, ISBN:0198506732]

A phagocytic vesicle is a cellular compartment that is formed when a cell engulfs a particle, such as a bacterium or a piece of debris. The process of engulfment is called phagocytosis. The phagocytic vesicle is a dynamic structure that undergoes a series of changes as it matures. Initially, the vesicle is a small, spherical structure that is surrounded by a single membrane. As the vesicle matures, it fuses with other vesicles, including lysosomes, which contain digestive enzymes. The contents of the lysosomes are released into the phagocytic vesicle, where they break down the engulfed particle. The breakdown products are then transported out of the phagocytic vesicle and into the cytoplasm. The phagocytic vesicle itself is eventually degraded by the cell. The phagocytic vesicle is a critical component of the immune system. It is responsible for removing harmful bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens from the body. It also plays a role in the removal of cellular debris. The phagocytic vesicle is a complex structure that is involved in a variety of cellular processes. It is essential for the health and survival of all multicellular organisms.'
